Topic: Fundamentals of Nuclear Power for Submarines
Nuclear Reactor diagram

Speaker: Weida Zhang, Advanced Reactor and Refueling Engineer at BMPC (Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corp.)

Weida graduated with a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering from Stony Brook University in 2014. While a student, he was involved in AIChE's Chem-E car competition and such research topics as the selective catalytic reduction of NOx. After attending the Nuclear Power School in 2015, Weida has worked to train U.S. Navy Officers, as well as enlisted sailors, and to operate a nuclear-powered prototype plant.

USS Washington
Abstract: In the last century, submarines have played a major role in naval superiority and changes in defense policy. Since the world's first nuclear powered submarine broke every speed and distance record set by conventional diesel-electric boats, nuclear power has helped to shape and define the U.S. Navy's role in today's world.

In this presentation, Weida will discuss the conception and history of the U.S. Navy and Army programs, the theory and advantages of nuclear power, and the concerns with disposal of irradiated material. The focus will be on fundamental concepts of a nuclear-powered plant and the driving factors causing the shift to nuclear over conventional power. Concepts unique to nuclear-power plants will provide insight into the additional considerations needed when dealing with radioactive and fissile material, as well as the context to the environmental and public health effects of radiation.
